Farmers will harvest 189.5 million mt of soybeans, corn, and rice in the summer, but the storage capacity is 187.9 million mt. A good winter corn harvest may exacerbate the situation.<\/p>\n<p>NASA calculates that Ukrainian farmers <a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/150590\/larger-wheat-harvest-in-ukraine-than-expected\">harvested<\/a> 26.6 million mt of wheat in 2022, down from the previous year\u2019s record harvest of 33 million mt but close to the five-year average of 27.9 million mt. Unfortunately, Ukraine cannot access 22 per cent of that wheat in the eastern part of the country due to the war.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The Ukrainian Grain Association (UGA) expects Ukraine\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2023\/01\/27\/ukraine-war-wagner-deserters-shot-china-sanctions-grain-harvest-set-to-nosedive\">grain and oilseed production<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">to drop to 53 million mt in 2023, down from around 65 million mt in 2022 and 106 million mt in 2021. The UGA president said it is no longer profitable for farmers to produce grain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As of 23<sup>rd<\/sup> January, <a href=\"https:\/\/ukragroconsult.com\/en\/news\/ukraine-corn-exports-almost-equal-to-last-years-level\/\">Ukraine had exported<\/a> 25.45 mln mt of grains and pulses, down 30 per cent on the previous season. Wheat exports amounted to 9.2 mln mt, down 45 per cent on last season. Corn exports amounted to 14.4 mln mt, up 3 per cent on last season.<\/p>\n<p>Inspections of Ukrainian grain ships have <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-health-russia-government-united-nations-business-b2f6bb9e50b7440ea6c18f66e016e145\">slowed<\/a> to half their peak rate, creating backlogs. About half of Germany\u2019s total winter rapeseed area of 1.07 million hectares currently goes to biodiesel production.<\/p>\n<p>In a blow to the European sugar beet industry, the Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled that member states can no longer offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/french-sugar-beet-pesticide-exemption-halted-by-eu-ruling-2023-01-20\/\">exemptions<\/a> to the bloc\u2019s ban on crop seeds treated with neonicotinoids.<\/p>\n<p>The UK government has ignored the ruling and authorized neonicotinoid pesticide treatments on this year\u2019s sugar beet crop. It explains why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/neonicotinoid-product-as-seed-treatment-for-sugar-beet-emergency-authorisation-application\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The UK government has (at last &#8211; phew!) published its plans to support farming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/jan\/26\/details-long-awaited-farming-subsidies-overhaul-england-revealed\">post-Brexit<\/a>. The government will base funding on environmental protection, such as conserving hedgerows and maintaining peatlands. The new incentives, called environmental land management schemes (ELMs), are worth \u00a32.4bn a year for this parliament.<\/p>\n<p>The FT argues that the new rules pose a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d127a2a9-325b-4c60-a0ff-cd1182a2432d\">significant risk<\/a> to farm finances. The newspaper writes, \u201cSo-called \u201cdirect payments\u201d from the EU based on land area made up 60 per cent of farm net income before Brexit. At a typical livestock farm, they accounted for the entirety of profits. Now they have been slashed by at least 35 per cent, with more cuts to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Louis Dreyfus Co. (LDC) has launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/apply.masschallenge.org\/en\/en-us\/mcch-ldc-climateprize-2023\">Climate Resilience Prize<\/a>, a new 100,000 Swiss franc award that supports start-ups working to drive climate resilience in agriculture and food value chains.<\/p>\n<p>A new study questions the environmental benefits of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/jan\/18\/revealed-forest-carbon-offsets-biggest-provider-worthless-verra-aoe\">rainforest carbon offsets<\/a>, arguing that 90 per cent of them are worthless. The study could, however, be <a href=\"https:\/\/carbonrisk.substack.com\/p\/the-signal-and-the-noise\">flawed<\/a> and based on wrong assumptions.<\/p>\n<p>Climate change will likely have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9824350\/#:~:text=The%20majority%20of%20the%20reported,coffee%20berry%20quality%20and%20yield\">negative impact<\/a> on coffee production, but the BBC explains how you can be a more environmentally friendly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-64293750\">coffee drinker<\/a>. Despite expectations to the contrary, export volumes fell by only ten per cent. Retail fertilizer prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dtnpf.com\/agriculture\/web\/ag\/crops\/article\/2023\/01\/25\/retail-fertilizer-prices-fall-lowest\">have now fallen<\/a> to their lowest in 15 months.<\/p>\n<p>BP Bunge announced that they will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/bp-bunges-brazil-joint-venture-quit-use-mineral-fertilizes-by-2025-2023-01-23\/\">phase out<\/a> the use of mineral fertilizers on their sugarcane fields by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The FT has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e157d9c2-8386-48ee-820e-93696d90a6d7\">interviewed<\/a> the CEO of Yara (the world\u2019s biggest fertilizer manufacturer) on the company\u2019s decarbonization plans.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers continue their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-20\/how-microbes-can-help-solve-the-world-s-fertilizer-problems\">quest<\/a> for alternative fertilizers, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-16\/human-waste-could-provide-safe-alternative-to-chemical-fertilizers\">human waste<\/a>, although Wired Magazine believes that the world is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-worlds-farms-are-hooked-on-phosphorus-its-a-problem\/\">hooked on phosphorous<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Animal protein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reuters writes that lab-grown meat could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/lab-grown-meat-moves-closer-american-dinner-plates-2023-01-23\/\">become a reality<\/a> in some US high-end restaurants as early as this year. Due to its cost, it could be a while before it hits supermarket shelves.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg has an alternative take on the issue, arguing that alt-meat is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2023-01-19\/beyond-meat-bynd-impossible-foods-burgers-are-just-another-food-fad\">just another food fad<\/a>. The news agency is more optimistic about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-26\/mega-factories-target-cow-free-milk-and-cheese-to-plug-shortage\">cow-free dairy products<\/a>. The FT <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/dfac1056-932f-4062-a6a2-d5e48ef00902\">agrees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the privately held Impossible Foods disagrees with Bloomberg\u2019s view on alt-meat, arguing that their alt-meat sales <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/01\/23\/impossible-foods-punches-back-against-report-calling-fake-meat-a-fad\/\">continue to grow<\/a>. \u00a0Some believe, however, that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/big-problem-plant-based-meat-142950580.html\">plant-based meat\u2019s error<\/a> may be the exact thing that was supposed to make it popular: Its attempt to be indistinguishable from meat.<\/p>\n<p>Investment is still coming into the sector with the <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Latest-Energy-News\/World-News\/300-Million-Fake-Meat-Fund-Aims-To-Decarbonize-The-Food-Industry.html\">launch<\/a> of a new $300 million Smart Protein Fund to \u201cback alternative proteins and decarbonize the food industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A professor at Stamford University believes that even if alt-meat proves popular, it will not decarbonize the sector. He says we should instead concentrate on <a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/2023\/01\/24\/rethinking-meat-substitutes\/\">reducing<\/a> GHG emissions from real meat (and dairy) production.
