The agreement will expire on 18<sup>th<\/sup> March unless an extension is agreed. Russia said that it would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/ukraine-crisis-grain-deal-idUSL8N34T3PC\">inappropriate<\/a> to extend the deal unless sanctions affecting its agricultural exports are lifted, and other issues are resolved.<\/p>\n<p>China has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/China-rolls-grain-corridor-into-12-point-Ukraine-peace-statement-27428.html\">included<\/a> maintaining the grain corridor as point nine in their recently published twelve-point peace plan.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, Ukraine has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/ukraine-seeks-higher-tonnage-ships-boost-exports-under-grain-deal-2023-02-10\/\">proposed<\/a> increasing the minimum tonnage of ships which export grain and vegetable oil from the country via the grain corridor and a new <a href=\"https:\/\/uga.ua\/en\/news\/ua-agricultural-ministry-announced-new-mechanism-for-queuing-and-increasing-vessel-tonnage-for-grain-corridor\/\">mechanism<\/a> for queueing.<\/p>\n<p>Grain exports from Ukraine have <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/united-nations-business-02978d1ab61d70939ff1581b1129d18a\">fallen<\/a> recently, with ship inspections now <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-health-russia-government-united-nations-business-b2f6bb9e50b7440ea6c18f66e016e145\">half<\/a> of what they were four months ago, with a backlog of 140 ships waiting for checking. Ukrainian and some US officials blame Russia for slowing down inspections, which Moscow has denied.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/can-ukraines-grain-deal-ease-global-food-crisis-2022-11-17\/\">exported<\/a> 21.1 mln mt of agricultural products under the agreement, including ten mln mt of corn and six mln mt of wheat. Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/black-sea-grain-initiative\/vessel-movements\">here<\/a> for a full breakdown of the receiving countries and quantities exported.<\/p>\n<p>An increase in the depth of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastmarkets.com\/insights\/draft-increase-in-danube-black-sea-canal-raises-hopes-of-ukraine-logistics\">canal<\/a> linking the River Danube with the Black Sea could improve logistics for Ukraine\u2019s shallow water ports and improve flows out if the grain corridor agreement collapses.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s President has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Russia-s-Putin-pushes-for-60-million-mt-grain-exports-by-end-2023-27348.html\">lauded<\/a> the country\u2019s farmers and announced a push to export 60 mln mt of grains by the end of 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other market news<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Argentina\u2019s worst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/argentinas-drought-hit-fields-billion-dollar-losses-farmers-going-under-2023-02-16\/\">drought<\/a> in 60 years is disastrous for local communities, destroying crops, bankrupting farmers and reducing exports. Bloomberg writes that it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-16\/climate-change-link-uncertain-in-historic-argentina-drought\">not related<\/a> to climate change. Chile is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/the-grass-does-not-grow-chiles-far-south-worst-drought-50-years-2023-02-09\/\">suffering,<\/a> with the country&#8217;s far south experiencing its worst drought in 50 years, hitting cattle ranchers and vegetable farmers.<\/p>\n<p>France is not doing much better, suffering its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/france-eyes-unprecedented-water-curbs-after-driest-winter-since-1959-2023-02-22\/\">worst drought in 64 years<\/a>. Authorities are preparing water restrictions, including on crop irrigation.<\/p>\n<p>High prices are encouraging wheat-importing countries to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/global-wheat-buyers\/global-wheat-buyers-set-up-for-price-shock-by-cutting-forward-purchases-idUSL4N3500SB\">purchase<\/a> supplies for only about two to three months of their future demand versus typical buying of up to six months forward.<\/p>\n<p>India will sell an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/current-affairs\/govt-to-offload-additional-2mn-tonnes-of-wheat-in-market-to-cut-prices-123022100757_1.html\">additional three mln mt<\/a> of wheat stocks to reduce domestic wheat and wheat flour prices. In addition, the government has said it does not plan to lift a <a href=\"https:\/\/sg.news.yahoo.com\/india-extend-rice-export-curbs-064510120.html\">ban<\/a> on broken rice exports and cut a 20% tax on overseas shipments of white rice.<\/p>\n<p>The trade war over GM corn between the US and Mexico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-14\/mexican-president-eases-limits-on-us-corn-imports-after-pressure\">continues<\/a> with little sign of a settlement. The US has refused an offer from Mexico to allow GM corn imports for animal feed. Meanwhile, China\u2019s farmers are starting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/china-rolls-out-gmo-corn-planting-starts-small-2023-02-16\/\">plant GM corn<\/a>, but less than one per cent of total corn acreage.<\/p>\n<p>Ivory Coast is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/ivory-coast-restricts-cocoa-bean-purchases-major-traders-cap-reached-2023-02-23\/\">restricting<\/a> some multinational traders from additional bean purchases for exports as the country seeks to avoid a shortage. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-17\/cash-crisis-hits-nigeria-cocoa-exports-in-fresh-blow-to-world-supply\">cash<\/a> shortage has left Nigeria\u2019s cocoa farmers unable to hire workers and exporters unable to get the crop to ships.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-23\/brazil-halts-beef-exports-to-china-after-confirming-mad-cow-case\">halted<\/a> beef exports to China after confirming a case of mad cow disease. The supermarkets and the government blame bad weather in southern Europe and north Africa. Others blame Brexit as there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2023\/feb\/23\/uk--fresh-food-shortages-rationing-spanish-farmers-blame-brexit-import-rules\">no shortage<\/a> in the EU or Switzerland. Others are betting on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b84b03f9-06a9-4c6f-bb94-589cd1f11d5a\">peecycling<\/a>. The FT tells us that \u201cthe urine passed by one adult in a day is enough to produce a loaf of bread\u201d.
