Ukraine will not speak <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/ukraine-starts-online-talks-with-partners-grain-export-deal-extension-source-2023-03-07\/\">directly<\/a> with Russia but through its partners. The UN Secretary-General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/un-chief-ukraine-wednesday-talk-black-sea-grain-deal-renewal-2023-03-07\/\">visited<\/a> Ukraine last week to discuss the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Russia has said that the current deal was only being &#8220;half-implemented&#8221;, raising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/russia-raises-doubts-about-grain-deal-renewal-deadline-looms-2023-03-09\/\">doubts<\/a> about whether it would allow an extension of the agreement due to expire next week. Russia said it would only agree to extend the if the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/ukraine-crisis-russia-grain-idAFS8N34304L\">interests<\/a> of its agricultural producers are considered. Even so, Cargill&#8217;s Chairman is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-06\/cargill-is-optimistic-landmark-ukrainian-grain-export-deal-will-be-renewed\">optimistic<\/a> that the Black Sea deal will be renewed.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/ukraine-crisis-grain-exports\/update-1-ukraine-says-grain-exports-reached-5-2-million-tonnes-in-february-idUSL8N35935S\">exported<\/a> 5.2 million mt of grain in February, bringing overall grain exports so far this season to 32.3 million mt, down almost 26 per cent on the previous season.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s grain harvest may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.com\/markets\/newswire\/update-2-ukraines-grain-harvest-may-fall-37-to-34-mln-t-in-2023-academy\">fall<\/a> 37 per cent to 34 million mt in 2023 because of a smaller grain sowing area and lower yield. In the short term, most of Ukraine&#8217;s winter grain crops &#8211; winter wheat and barley &#8211; are in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/most-ukraines-winter-grain-crops-good-condition-scientists-2023-03-06\/\">good condition<\/a> and could produce a good harvest.<\/p>\n<p>It will be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/facing-minefields-cash-crunch-ukraine-farmers-sow-smaller-crop-2023-03-08\/\">challenge<\/a> for the country to rebuild its agricultural production in the long term. Some meteorologists believe it will quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.world-grain.com\/articles\/18212-transition-from-la-nina-to-el-nino-may-be-quick\">transition<\/a> to El Nino, even as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/us-forecaster-says-el-nino-could-arrive-by-summer-2023-2023-03-09\/\">early<\/a> as this Northern Hemisphere summer.<\/p>\n<p>Argentina&#8217;s farmers will be relieved. However, the damage has already been done. At the same time,\u00a0Bloomberg goes with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-06\/wheat-exports-from-australia-seen-shrinking-on-drier-conditions\">Australia Sees Wheat Exports Plunging 20 Per Cent on Drier Climate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea is teetering on the brink of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2023\/2\/28\/north-koreas-kim-orders-radical-change-in-agriculture\">famine<\/a> with a surge in deaths from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/north-korean-food-shortage-seems-be-worsening-south-korea-says-2023-02-15\/\">hunger<\/a>. The country&#8217;s leader has ordered urgent infrastructure improvements and farmland expansion\u00a0to ramp up food production.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wheat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brazil has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/brazil-agency-approves-cultivation-of-gmo-wheat-in-the-country\">approved<\/a> the cultivation of drought-resistant GM wheat, making it the second country after Argentina to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Further north, BASF is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/basf-wheat\/basf-halting-hybrid-wheat-seed-development-in-north-america-idUSKBN2V33XP\">halting<\/a> the development of hybrid wheat in North America after the results of seed trials failed to reach development goals. Growers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/news\/crops\/wheat\/us-becoming-less-competitive-growing-wheat-new-warning-sign-future-wheat\">fear<\/a> it could drive more wheat acres out of the US.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, acres of non-durum wheat in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-02\/ample-wheat-supplies-may-get-another-boost-from-canadian-farmers\">Canada<\/a> could rise as much as 7.3 per cent in 2023 as growers shift acres away from oats and pulses.<\/p>\n<p>There is an increasing possibility that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Possibility-of-India-importing-wheat-firming-up-trade-sources-27541.html\">India<\/a>, the third-biggest producer of wheat in the world, will import wheat to supply the domestic market.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biofuels<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brazil will produce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/brazils-corn-based-ethanol-supply-grows-as-firms-add-capacity-trade-group\">six billion litres<\/a> of corn ethanol in the 2023\/2024 season that begins in April, up 36.7 per cent over last season. Corn ethanol is expected to account for 19 per cent of all ethanol consumed in the country next season, up from 13.7 per cent in the current season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Palm Oil<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Indonesia plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/indonesia-palmoil-idUSKBN2V408O\">require<\/a> crude palm oil exports to go through a futures exchange to create the country&#8217;s own benchmark price.<\/p>\n<p>A leading analyst told a conference that the EU&#8217;s deforestation law is unlikely to have a meaningful impact on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/global-palmoil-fry-idAFL4N35E2BC\">palm oil demand<\/a> as consumption is rising consumption in developing countries. Indonesia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/indonesias-biodiesel-policy-dry-weather-keep-palm-oil-prices-elevated-2023-03-08\/\">biofuel policy<\/a> should also help to keep prices high.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sustainable development<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Child labour and deforestation still<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-02\/the-environmental-disaster-lurking-inside-your-chocolate-bar\">plague<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">the cocoa supply chain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A new study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41558-023-01605-8\">warns<\/a> that emissions from the food system alone will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/mar\/06\/meat-dairy-rice-high-methane-food-production-bust-climate-target-study\">drive<\/a> the world past 1.5C of global warming unless high-methane foods are tackled.
