It is the lowest since July 2021.<\/p>\n<p>However, UK grocery inflation has hit a new record high of 17.5 per cent. Sky News blames rising <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/sugar-cost-rises-driving-food-prices-to-record-highs-12843534\">sugar<\/a> prices, while the FT blames <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0442f782-a3d3-41c9-9c09-46f96967a7d5\">fruit and vegetables<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>The War in Ukraine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Poland and Ukraine have agreed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/poland-suspend-imports-ukraine-grain-agriculture-minister-robert-telus\/\">temporarily stop<\/a> all Ukrainian grain imports into Poland, although the restrictions do not extend to the transit of grain. Polish Agriculture Minister had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/polish-agriculture-minister-resigns-amid-anger-over-ukrainian-grain-imports-2023-04-05\/\">resigned<\/a> earlier in the week over the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of farmers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/romanian-farmers-block-borders-in-protest-over-ukrainian-grain-imports-\/7040902.html\">protested<\/a> across Romania over the impact of Ukrainian grain imports, blocking traffic and border checkpoints with tractors and trucks.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s first deputy farm minister said his country might <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/ukraine-crisis-grain-exports-idAFL1N36912A\">export<\/a> a further 15.6 million mt of grain in the April to June quarter, which would lift this season&#8217;s exports to nearly 53 million mt.<\/p>\n<p>However, Russia&#8217;s Foreign Minister has <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/russia-west-must-remove-obstacles-123710381.html\">warned<\/a> that Russia may pull out of the Ukrainian grain export deal if the West fails to remove obstacles to Russian agricultural exports. He said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/turkey-agrees-with-russia-request-lift-fertiliser-export-obstacles-2023-04-07\/\">a lack of access<\/a> to insurance and the SWIFT financial messaging system curtails exports.<\/p>\n<p>Cargill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-29\/glencore-backed-viterra-plans-to-exit-russian-grain-trade\">Viterra<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/louis-dreyfus-stop-exporting-russian-grain-july-1-2023-04-03\/\">LDC<\/a> will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Viterra-confirms-plans-to-exit-Russian-grain-export-market-28080.html\">exit<\/a> the Russian domestic grain export markets and stop elevating activities (buying grain from farmers, moving it to the ports and loading it onto vessels.) They will still trade Russian grain, but only on a FOB of C&amp;F basis. He added that the country would &#8220;probably end up with the same figure of 112 million mt of production or in the worst-case scenario, there will be a negligible drop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even so, India&#8217;s government said the wheat export ban would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.millenniumpost.in\/business\/export-ban-on-wheat-to-continue-record-output-likely-even-after-untimely-rains-fci-513276\">continue<\/a> if the country feels uncomfortable with domestic supplies. Meanwhile, the government may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/india-plans-to-relax-wheat-procurement-norms-to-replenish-stocks-0\">relax<\/a> norms to procure wheat from farmers for domestic reserves.<\/p>\n<p>The Business Recorder is worried about global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brecorder.com\/news\/40233599\">wheat security<\/a>, writing that per capita availability has declined from 111 kg per person in 1990 to under 100 kg per person in 2020. Meanwhile, The Economist is worried about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/leaders\/2023\/03\/30\/how-to-fix-the-global-rice-crisis\">rice yields<\/a>, writing that they have increased by less than one per cent yearly over the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>Argentina, expected to harvest around 25 million mt of soybeans this season, may have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/brazil-may-supply-up-to-50-of-argentinas-soy-imports-in-2023-analysts-say\">import<\/a> up to 10 million mt, more than double previous years, mainly from Paraguay and Brazil.
