The March CPI showed seasonally adjusted prices for food consumed at home dropped 0.3 per cent compared to February \u2013 the first drop since September 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The news from the UK is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2023\/apr\/19\/why-are-uk-food-prices-up-by-19-and-which-foods-are-worst-affected\">less encouraging<\/a>. UK food and drink inflation reached 19.1 per cent in March. Meanwhile, Ukraine is looking to bolster exports through the three ports in the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/ukraine-says-danube-ports-critical-083758564.html\">Danube cluster<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Russia had already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agricensus.com\/Article\/Istanbul-vessel-inspections-suspended-for-second-day-in-a-row-28377.html#:~:text=Inspections%20of%20vessels%20waiting%20to,sources%20told%20Agricensus%20on%20Tuesday.\">suspended<\/a> inspections of vessels waiting to exit or enter the Ukrainian Black Sea for two days last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2023\/04\/18\/food-humanitarian-crisis-global-hunger-ukraine-war-agriculture\/\">blaming<\/a> the UN and Ukraine for failing to register ships correctly.<\/p>\n<p>The UN said it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/apr\/12\/ukraine-farmers-warn-russia-war-global-effects-food-exports\">talking<\/a> intensively to the parties involved. \u201cIt is in everyone\u2019s interests to keep the initiative going,\u201d it stressed, saying it benefited \u201cmillions of vulnerable and low-income households\u201d. Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine is already causing a global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/04\/20\/what-ukraines-declining-grain-production-means-for-global-food-trade.html\">shift<\/a> in the trading of grains and causing <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2023\/04\/18\/food-humanitarian-crisis-global-hunger-ukraine-war-agriculture\/\">hunger<\/a> in importing countries.<\/p>\n<p>In an attempt to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/bfd41b2b-ac1b-45d7-b6b4-19da0c615f9d\">regularise trade policy<\/a> after Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Slovakia announced bans on food products from Ukraine, the European Commission announced emergency <a href=\"https:\/\/ahdb.org.uk\/news\/analyst-insight-ukrainian-grain-weighs-on-eu-markets\">preventative measures<\/a>, including \u20ac100 million in compensation for affected farmers.
