The companies explained that using blockchain technology and artificial intelligence (AI) would significantly reduce costs as well as improve transparency. The process, which has already started in grain and oilseed operations, should gradually be deployed for other commodities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this in mind, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twst.com\/update\/adm-archer-daniels-midland-company-adm-and-cargill-to-help-farmers-achieve-greater-profitability-with-grainbridge-technology-joint-venture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADM and Cargill announced a joint venture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abettergrainfuture.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grainbridge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a digital grains marketing platform to help farmers in North America market their grains. Cargill said the platform will be free and will let farmers use technology, such as data analytics, to improve their profitability. The platform is open to other grain companies too which will encourage farmers to use the ADM and Cargill transactions and contracts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the US, Cargill announced it developed <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/cargill-robot-helps-farmers-move-herds-with-less-stress-more-safety\/498747741\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">robots to herd animals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at its plants, including cattle and eventually turkeys, in a bid to improve animal welfare as well as to protect workers. The robot was approved by a famous animal behaviourist who said it was \u201ca major innovation in the handling and welfare of farm animals.\u201d The robot doesn\u2019t look much like a human cowboy (you can check it out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cargill.com\/story\/meet-the-cowboy-robot-thats-making-cattle-herding-safer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) but it will be saying \u2018Hey! Hey! Hey!\u2019 to move the cows along. In Europe, Cargill announced it launched its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodingredientsfirst.com\/news\/cargill-launches-starch-sustainability-program-across-europe.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waxy Corn Promise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program, an initiative to help it sustainably source all of its waxy corn &#8211; a type of corn used to produce starches. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Separately, Cargill Aqua Nutrition said it would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intrafish.com\/aquaculture\/1618890\/cargill-threatens-swift-action-against-rogue-feed-suppliers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not tolerate soy suppliers who violate its code of conduct<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including deforestation. The announcement was made after a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/av\/world-latin-america-46022184\/global-hunger-for-soybeans-destroying-brazil-s-cerrado-savanna\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WWF report <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said that soybean demand had turned Brazil\u2019s Cerrado area, one of the world\u2019s most biodiverse places, into the planet\u2019s most endangered region. Environmentalists are concerned the situation is about to get worse if Brazil\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-46039996\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">newly elected president<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> goes ahead with his plan to merge the ministries of agriculture and the environment. Similarly, the head of Greenpeace in Argentina said that \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/oct\/26\/soy-destruction-deforestation-in-argentina-leads-straight-to-our-dinner-plates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Argentina is in a forest emergency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d Nearly 25% of the country&#8217;s native forest has been cleared, with a big part going to grow soybean. An EU-based NGO said there was pretty much no traceability of soybean in the country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mondelez announced it would extend its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyherald.com\/business\/20181024\/mondelez-launches-cocoa-life-in-brazil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cocoa Life program to Brazil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cocoa-sourcing sustainability program it already operates in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Indonesia, India and the Dominican Republic. The program will aim to reduce deforestation in the Amazon as well as improve the welfare of farmers through yield improvements, among other things. This comes at a time when IRAdvocates, the human rights advocacy group which is suing Nestle and Cargill for aiding and abetting child slavery in West Africa, said it is planning to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confectionerynews.com\/Article\/2018\/10\/25\/Child-slavery-lawsuit-against-Nestle-and-Cargill-allowed-to-proceed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attack other chocolate makers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including Mars. IRAdvocates argued that any company sourcing cocoa from the Ivory Coast was complicit in using child labour. Nestle said that the companies that were working the hardest to end child labour were being targeted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going back to the WWF report, it also found that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-46028862\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world had lost over half of its invertebrate species<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between 1970 and 2014 as a result of increasing demand for food, water and energy. The report argued that the risk of water species disappearing was particularly high because of plastic pollution. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tesco and Nestle announced they joined the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessgreen.com\/bg\/news\/3065302\/tesco-and-nestle-sign-up-to-global-ghost-gear-initiative\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a 91-member initiative which works to eradicate the number of nets and other fishing gear debris in the oceans, estimated to account for 10% of marine debris. Similarly, Danone said that by 2025 \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.environmentalleader.com\/2018\/10\/danone-makes-bold-moves-toward-100-circular-packaging\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100% of its packaging should be \u2018circular<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u2019 by which it means recyclable, reusable or compostable, compared to 86% currently. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concept of \u2018circularity\u2019 is also taking hold among those trying to combat food wastage. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.handyshippingguide.com\/shipping-news\/eliminating-food-waste-has-ramifications-for-the-supply-chain_9495\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers from a university in the UK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been looking at \u2018circular economic thinking\u2019 from the second world war as an inspiration, such as how to efficiently redistribute unsold food.
