The scale of the investigation is unprecedented which is why the government took so long to respond to claims made by a former employee almost four years ago, although experts note that the investigation could proceed very quickly. The group was reportedly surprised by the timing of the investigation as it was rushing to finalise a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-11-20\/where-does-noble-investigation-leave-3-5-billion-restructuring\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USD 3.5 billion debt restructuring deal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before a November 27 deadline. Investigators conceded that the probe could delay the plan, which would put the whole proposal at stake and potentially threaten the survival of the group who noted that the only alternative would be to file for insolvency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world\u2019s major food companies have been involved in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-11-19\/mondelez-is-said-to-hire-morgan-stanley-to-study-tim-tam-bid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquisitions worth USD 128.7 billion this year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so far and show no signs of slowing down. Sources reported that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/11\/09\/campbells-cookie-unit-attracts-attention-from-kraft-heinz.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mondelez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was looking to purchase Australia\u2019s Arnott\u2019s Biscuits and Denmark\u2019s Kelsen Group, both biscuit makers. And four months after announcing that it was planning to sell its international and fresh food segments, Campbell Soup has drawn interest from Pacific Equity Partners and Kraft Heinz in bids that could reach USD 3 billion. Meanwhile, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-11-14\/drink-that-warmed-world-war-i-soldiers-makes-last-stand-in-india\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kraft Heinz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said it would sell its malted milk drink segment in India as demand is slowing shifting away from the high-sugar content drink that was originally marketed as a health drink. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) also said it was selling its malt-drink business in the country, with both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/industry\/cons-products\/fmcg\/will-pursue-prudent-acquisitions-nestle-global-chief-executive-mark-schneider\/articleshow\/66714995.cms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unilever and Nestle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reportedly interested in a takeover with bids estimated at USD 3.1-3.5 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is a key market for Nestle, its CEO told reporters during a roundtable organised this week. He also highlighted that the firm learnt the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/companies\/nestle-ceo-s-lesson-from-2015-maggi-crisis-address-concerns-quickly-118112000685_1.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">importance of reacting quickly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the age of social media when the Indian government decided to ban the sales of Maggi Noodles because of concerns that they contained too much lead. The firm was eventually cleared, he noted, although it had to destroyed 30,000mt of noodles and never recovered its market share. Public concern is currently working against Nestle in Michigan, as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/flint\/index.ssf\/2018\/11\/nestle_ad_promoting_support_of.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> campaigners criticised a new ad campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which focuses on the free bottles delivered by Nestle to local residents. Activist highlight that Nestle only pays USD 200\/year per plant to extract water in the state, while it was recently allowed to increase its extraction rate from 250gal\/min to 400gal\/min. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In California, voters <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmfutures.com\/commentary\/california-impose-its-elite-food-standards-farmers-other-states\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overwhelmingly voted in favour of a new law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that increases the minimum size of cages used for breeding pigs and calves, ignoring the comments by food producers who warned that prices will increase as a result. California will also ban the sale of products within the state if they do not meet the new standards, which is concerning producers around the country &#8211; and around the world &#8211; who now face higher costs if they want to compete. To complicate matters further, a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.sustainableeggcoalition.org\/resources\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study by the USDA, Michigan State and Iowa State<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that larger cages do not necessarily mean healthier animals, as hens were found to be twice as likely to die when given more space than the current convention. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White House policies are also grabbing<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/edfenergyexchange\/2018\/11\/15\/3-reasons-why-apple-danone-mars-nestle-and-unilever-just-stood-up-for-strong-climate-policy\/#f8e3cee5c9d1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the attention of major food producers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as Danone, Mars, Nestle and Unilever &#8211; all members of the Sustainable Food Policy Alliance (SFPA) &#8211; urged the government not to replace the Clean Power Plan with weaker regulation. In their public comments, they argued that, on top of threatening the world\u2019s food supply, climate change was bad for business. Sustainability is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.inquirer.net\/260920\/wellness-sustainability-and-convenience-will-lead-food-and-drink-industry-2019-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the three main criteria that is expected to trend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the food industry next year, according to Mintel research. Palm oil could also end up at the center of a battle between two Italian giant competing for chocolate spread supremacy. Barilla is reportedly<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/nutella-rival-barilla\/rpt-jar-wars-the-italian-plot-to-weaken-nutella-idUSL8N1XW1PI\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> planning to launch a new spread in January<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to compete with Ferrero\u2019s Nutella, which currently controls 54% of the global market.
